Segment timing, also known as split timing, is the technique of dividing a track into sections and keeping times for each section, all of which add up to the complete lap time. By splitting a lap into distinct sections, a rider can isolate the section that is slowing him down the most, and adjust the bike and his technique to compensate.

For example an oval track can be split into two straight-aways and two curves. Now the curve times from lap to lap can be compared, and the driver can test different lines, entrance and exit points and speeds, to find the best time in the curve. Motocross tracks can be split to isolate the whoop section, for example, so a driver can concentrate on improving his time in that section. By comparing the split times of competitors in a race, the driver can find what section he needs to improve most in order to win.

Recently the AMA began testing a segment timing system. “The new segment system tested well at Anaheim III and, once fully implemented, will prove to be a very valuable addition to the Supercross and Motocross series,” AMA Supercross/Motocross Timing and Scoring Manager Conrad Young said in a recent press release. “From an informational standpoint, segment times are an accurate way to determine a rider’s specific strengths and whether or not adjustments are needed.”

Modern lap timers mount on the bike and have two components, a display and a receiver. The lap timer works in conjunction with a beacon (transmitter) that is located trackside. The receiver on the timer picks up the signal from the beacon each time the bike passes the beacon and marks a lap. To set up splits, multiple beacons are used to mark the segments. Portable optic beacons are a good option as riders can set up splits wherever he riding. Often a track will setup beacons for all riders to use.

The right lap timing equipment can make segment timing easy. Look for a small, easily mounted lap timer with a large, readable display. Make sure the lap timer can display and store split times. Look for split management features that can display the split times in variety of formats. Finally, look for a download capability and included analysis software.

“The MyChron Light TG Lap Timer from AiM Sports is the perfect lap timer for motorcycle racers,” said Michael Jaynes, President of AiM Sports. “It supports up to five split times and has three split modes – accumulative, variation and split -- to give the rider exactly the view he wants. Despite its compact size, it stores over 2000 lap times, connects to a PC via USB, and has a bold display readable at 40 feet.”
